Microsoft researchers have been working for many years on their home-automation OS and are testing a prototype in a few of homes. In a new white paper published by Microsoft on Microsoft research site, they have divulged details on how their HomeOS will work to make home automation a reality. More than ten years back Microsoft executives were touting a futuristic home where smart devices would be able to interoperate and communicate.

Microsoft described their HomeOS as "PC-like abstraction" for in home devices like TV’s , lights, PCs, routers, gaming consoles, printers, mobile phones, cameras, and many more which would appear to the user of HomeOS as peripherals connected to a single computer. HomeOS not windows based, has been built by using .Net Framework 4.0 and C# as explained by the white paper. HomeOS runs on a dedicated home PC while the kernel allows easy incorporation of new application and devices, to which it provides access.

Microsoft has been testing HomeOS over the past few months in twelve real homes and forty two of their students have made new apps and have provided support for additional devices as well. The apps are available through HomeStore, which is an app store portal for installation on home gateway PC. Though no commercializing plans yet, but definitely a proof that Microsoft is seriously pursuing their dream of Home-automation OS.
