Samsung might have already announced that it had absolutely zero interest in webOS, but the exact reason why has now been made abundantly clear. It turns out that Samsung had been batting its eyes furtively at someone else: MeeGo.
Technically, it’s not quite MeeGo, but a re-born OS called Tizen — which is also absorbing the LiMo project. Tizen will be hosted by The Linux Foundation, while Samsung and Intel lead the technical teams in charge of development. The first public release of Tizen is slated for the first quarter of next year, and the development process will be completely open — none of that “develop closed, release open when we’re ready” business like with Android.
Samsung, of course, has been a tad nervous about Android ever since the Google-Motorola Mobility deal went down. But with no interest in webOS and its own Bada OS to look after, it seemed as though Samsung might be content to keep plugging away without getting its hands dirty in someone else’s code.
Interestingly enough, Tizen applications will be built using HTML5 and other standard web code. That’s a lot like what Mozilla wants to do with its Boot To Gecko project — right down to Tizen’s plans to offer APIs that will allow those languages access to hardware like cameras and network adapters and features like messaging and multimedia.
Time will tell if this is a smart move by Samsung. Interest in MeeGo has been fairly limited so far, so the trio has its work cut out if Tizen is to become a success. At least they didn’t have to shell out $1.2 billion to pick up an OS like some people.
